Bukowski Beats Out the Bible

If you were frantically trying to start/finish your Holiday shopping on December 23rd like I was (New Year's resolution: be more organized) you might have enjoyed some quality radio time in the heavy traffic or in between curses about the state of the economy while filling up your gas tank.  I was out on the west coast visiting family, happy to have a car to load up as opposed to the wire "granny grocery cart" that mom thought would be so useful but had been collecting dusts and monopolizing space in the corner of my Manhattan studio.  The radio was a delightful old friend to visit, as  New York transportation is mollified by pairing an ipod with walking or a book with the subway. I fell back into NPR as if I was plugging back into the world.  "On the Media" was playing and Brooke Gladstone and author Ron Rosenbaum were discussing where the half-priced books that fill the folding tables on Manhattan sidewalks come from which had always peaked my interest. The explanation boiled down to these books coming "off the back of trucks." Practically in unison, Ms. Gladstone and I asked the inevitable follow-up question” who would steal a book”?  There was much back and forth speculation over the profiles of such a culprit, but one thing was clear "on both coasts and points in between, Bukowski is the number-one choice of book bandits." Bukowski tops the list over the heavily pocketed Bible, which the press officer of the American Library Association, Larra Clark, reported was lifted in many libraries, as was Harry Potter, the bible for many 9-90 year olds.  The Bible did beat out Bukowski for familiarity though, as Larra Clark had to confess about the poet, "I personally, I've got to admit, didn't know who that was".  Perhaps I will send Ms. Clark a late holiday gift.  Read more at onthemedia.
