What a weekend...

Our Harper Perennial Lit Chick event at KGB was a hit!  Emily Maguire, Sarah Hall, and Heather O'Neill went very well togther.  Lots of bloggers and members of the public showed.  The beer flowed like wine and I was in bed by 10:00pm.  Can't ask for more than that.  We'll have pictures up tomorrow on the Olive Reader.

Les Bienvillantes

Jonathan Littel's novel, Les Bienvillantes, which translates as "The Kindly Ones" has found a US publisher.  After a week of courting and vying among houses, Littel has decided to publish his 903-page novel about a Nazi SS officer with HarperCollins.  We're very excited.  Read the NY Times article here.  GalleyCat has an interesting take as well.

Cover Design

A dear colleague referred me to these two cover design blogs: COVER and Book Covers from the NYTBR.  Each site catalogues the trends and innovations of the book design trade.  With all that art, they're nice to look at, but the most valuable features on both are the comments.  Art directors, book designers, and other like-minded talents weigh in on the merits and flaws of each cover.  Being the industry insiders they are, the commenters have some pretty insightful things to say and often recommend cool stuff -- like this "Cow" by artist Marion Peck.  Say "Hello," Cow.  Hiya.

The Harper Perennial Team hard at work turning galleys with the wrong title and cover into beautiful advance copies of Promise Not to Tell by Jennifer McMahon, which involved placing 600 cover stickers onto 600 galleys.  This doesn't happen often.  In fact, first time in any of our memories.  But damnit, we were up for it.

Hope everyone had a good weekend.  Mine was SuperCool.  I've been receiving some interesting e-mails with links to all sorts of stuff.  Currently, I'm financially involved with several African dissidents and an expatriate Royal living in Tahiti.  It's all on the up and up.  Anyway, here are some other tidbits of note:

The Kenyon Review shares from their archives a 1965 interview with T.S. Eliot. "It's profitable to appeal to the largest audience and therefore to the lowest common denominator."
